Over 20 years ago, one of Dovetail’s founders, Tim Rote, had the opportunity to enjoy a fly fishing trip at Madison Valley Ranch just outside charming Ennis, Montana. That experience made a lasting impression on Tim, and likely played a role in Dovetail choosing southwest Montana as where to put down roots.
Fast forward to more recent times, and things have come full circle; when the owners of Madison Valley Ranch wanted to build a home on scenic Ennis Lake, they reached out to Dovetail.
Given the stupendous mountain views immediately to the southwest, the home was strategically planned to ensure the windows were positioned to take full advantage of the majestic panorama. An appealing combination of old timbers with contemporary steel elements are some of the highlights within a beautiful open floor plan concept. Generous dry-stack stone with steel accents are used for both fireplaces, and a custom Dovetail-built walnut bar is already a conversation starter over cocktail hour.

Ennis Lake House

At the foot of one of Montana’s most dramatic mountain ranges sits Crazy Trixie’s magnificent compound of contemporary cabins. This unique family getaway is comprised of a handful of guest cabins that connect via beautiful hand-laid stone slab walkways to the common activity cabin, where friends and family can gather for meals and entertainment.
The structures themselves are noteworthy, with exposed modern steel rafters artfully juxtaposed with reclaimed siding from the original ranch buildings, offering an intriguing combination of old and new. Generous exterior doors deliver direct access to the wide open views that surround the place, and inside, custom-finished white oak cabinets and wall appointments are just some of the examples of the exacting craftsmanship that our Dovetail crew brought to this project.
With Trixie and her friends enjoying time at the compound, we were asked to take on a second project — a clay pigeon structure that would match the vibe of the rest of the buildings. Now, skeet shooting is yet another fun activity to be found at this truly outstanding property.

Clean lines and remarkably creative elements came together to produce a magnificent home just steps away from one of the tee boxes at Black Bull, a private golf community. It’s hard to put a finger on our favorite aspect of this attractive home, as there are so many — but certainly the stonework surrounding the fireplace in the great room, the interior’s beautiful shades of gray, and the sunken fire pit with views of the Bridger Mountains are a few such highlights. But for the homeowner, looking out to see grandchildren learning to golf, or other family members enjoying the stunning Montana scenery, well that’s probably the true highlight of their new home.

The shape of the home uniquely enhances the essence of living on the banks of the Snake River and in the shadow of the Tetons by connecting the lake to the main property. An extended dock and suspended outdoor room allow residents to privately take in the breathtaking Wyoming views. The home exemplifies natural beauty with antique accents, reclaimed wood and stone features, and regional building materials—all magnified by the surrounding wetlands, open country, and magnificent mountains.

Outdoor lifestyle and recreation define the home’s easy flow from indoors to out. A glass corridor linking the master suite to other areas of the home offers an additional connection to nature. Thoughtful landscape design naturally enhances Meadow Springs’ ancient aspen grove on the edge of the pond.

The Jackson, WY area is very much protected by stringent environmental codes in order to sustain the natural beauty for years to come. As a result, this house uses no fossil fuel energy, and crews worked delicately to avoid disturbing the property’s natural water features and wildlife habitat. Additionally, extensive restoration of ancient riparian features and wetlands were implemented by Verdone Landscape Architects.

Meadow Springs

This was the idea behind the remodel of this Jackson, Wyoming home located along Indian Springs Drive. No stranger to building Indian Springs homes, Big-D Signature collaborated with JLF architects to remodel this traditional log-style mountain home, which was completed in two phases. To celebrate the old and welcome the new, the entirety of this 10,375-square-foot, 3-level home, which features an attached garage and upper-level living area, was remodeled in a contemporary design while maintaining the bones and character of an authentic mountain home.

As part of the first phase of the project, Big-D Signature made myriad structural changes to remodel and contemporize the home. The home’s log columns were traded out for modern steel columns, while the entire interior of the home was media blasted and whitewashed for a clean, contemporary look. Big-D Signature also installed new windows, doors, and finishes throughout the home, as well as a curved operable window wall, a bonderized roof, and architectural steel. For the second phase of the project, Big-D Signature performed extensive landscaping and hardscaping of the property.

As if by some brand of mountain magic hailing from deep within forest reaches, this Jackson, Wyoming home was transformed from its humble, yet treasured past into a fresh, modernized mountain haven that reflects the crisp renewal of breathing in fresh mountain air during a tranquil summer in the Tetons.

Old Boots, New Dirt

A house floating on water—or so it seems. Responding to the lakeside site, the building unfolds in four segments connected by footbridges. Pitched roofs of Corten steel hover above walls clad in stacked limestone and reclaimed timber. A Tennessean sanctuary of space and light, as serene as a pagoda, as homey as a ranch.

Homeowners wanted a unique feature as part of the property, so part of the Hidden Lake House extends onto the adjacent lake. Portions of the project were built in the neighboring lake. Local and state regulations didn’t allow construction of a cofferdam, so the sturdy stone columns were built as separate panels on the shore and then attached to steel piles driven into the lakebed. A complex project, indeed, Big-D Signature partnered with JLF Architects to make the homeowners’ vision a reality.

Park City, UT

Cascade House

This hillside Park City house is grounded in century-old Western history evoked through rustic reclaimed corral board siding, two-foot-thick Montana moss rock walls strategically deconstructed as tumbled “ruins” and a homesteader-like cluster of structures. Contemporary expanses of glass and steel connect timber and stone forms and invite nature, capturing high-country panoramas and the sounds and sparkle of multiple Verdone Landscape Architects water features, including a mining sluice box-style waterfall that flows under the opens-to-the-elements dining room.
