This project consisted of four structures on a 17-acre site in Washington’s Columbia Basin, including the 26,337-sf temple, 16,214-sf stake center, small utility building, and a pavilion. The temple is a single attached central spire structure with Portuguese Branco Cristal granite cladding, art glass, and custom bronze doors. Interior spaces include two sealing rooms, two endowment rooms, a celestial room, instruction rooms, baptistry, dressing rooms, waiting areas, clothing rental area, laundry room, and administrative offices.
The Stake Center is a one-story, wood-framed structure with a brick exterior. Interior spaces include a large chapel with rostrum, cultural center with stage area, three office areas for local bishops and clerks, a high council room, office areas for stake president and clerk, serving area with kitchen amenities, thirteen classrooms, a baptismal font, and a distribution center.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Moses Lake Washington Temple

The Tucson Arizona Temple was constructed on a 7-acre site in the Catalina Foothills. The two-story, 39,000-sf temple features a Mission-style design similar to the temple in Tijuana, Mexico. The temple features a cupola with a peak of about 27 feet above the base and platform. The dome-shaped cupola resembles the famous dome that crowns the Florence Cathedral in Italy. Big-D utilized BIM technology to create 3D models of the temple prior to construction. The Tucson Arizona Temple was the sixth temple constructed in Arizona.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Tucson Arizona Temple

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ Philadelphia Temple was a joint venture project between Big-D Construction and LF Driscoll. The 61,466-sf, granite-clad temple is the first temple built in Pennsylvania and located in the Center City District, diagonal to Logan Square. The temple features architectural elements that complement the classic architecture of the neighboring historic buildings. The temple has premium, Level 5 drywall finishes including plaster interior trim and finish. Stained glass panes run the length of the building, which is surrounded by a landscaped plaza featuring a reflecting pool. The project scope included a multi-level sub-grade parking structure. Challenges included a highly constrained urban site which the team mitigated by working closely with the City to ensure construction did not disrupt traffic, closing sidewalks, and constructing protective walkaways to protect curious onlookers during construction. Parking was also a challenge, especially for our trade partners, and many of our tradesmen rode public transportation to the site.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Philadelphia Utah Temple

The Ogden Amphitheater is located in the Historic Municipal Gardens in downtown Ogden, Utah. The project consists of an outdoor venue with 273 fixed seats, 15,000-sf of sloped grass area for audiences and 7,000-sf of cement/paver surface suitable for temporary bleacher seating. The project scope included construction of the new amphitheater, concession stand, gardens, open concrete paver area and sloped grass area including garden landscaping. The approximately 35’ x 30’stage is concrete at the front portion and composite wood floor at the rear. A roll-up door separates the front and back portions of the stage. The backstage area consists of staging areas, two large dressing rooms, a private dressing room, restrooms, office, and storage space. The concession stand is accessed from backstage. The Amphitheater has lighting and sound systems suitable for a variety of event types.

Red Butte Garden is one of the nation’s pre-eminent botanic gardens and a multi-purpose facility for people seeking horticultural knowledge, exercise, recreation, or family-based activities. This project included the addition of a new concert pavilion with supporting restrooms and a new rose garden area. The pavilion was specifically built for the Red Butte Garden Concert Series. The rose garden was revamped with the addition of a new rose garden display and wedding area space perfect for a city that has one of the highest volumes of weddings in the country. Big-D planted new vegetation and lawn areas, created new garden walls, arbors, ADA accessible paths, seating areas, and security fencing. The project scope also included sitework to relocate Red Butte Road.

Red Butte Garden Amphitheatre

The Lost Pines Art Center is a comprehensive regional arts facility built on an iconic historic site, the 100-year-old Powell Cotton Seed Mill. The new Center is a two-story facility that includes a large art gallery, community gathering space, offices, conference room, art studios, foundry, hot glass shop, ceramics kiln, coffee shop, and gift shop. The building exterior was constructed with a proprietary metal roof and siding system that consists of high-recycled content steel that is used to create a heat-avoiding ventilated radiation barrier system. The site included four large steel silos that were preserved and repurposed &#8211; three into working art studios and one as a residence for visiting artists. Sitework included construction of an outdoor pavilion, small amphitheater, a large green space for festivals, artificial stream, stone walls, a rainwater collection system, and water storage cisterns.

Lost Pines Art Center

The Palo Alto Art Center project was for the renovation of a long-standing civic building that is used as a community art and exhibition space. The Center is a single-story, modern ranch style building that required numerous updates. The renovation included construction of architectural layout improvements to upgrade the main gallery space and entrance lobby to better display traveling and local art exhibits, a whole roof replacement, repair and replacement of deteriorated wood members throughout the facility, interior finishes such as glazing, doors, windows, and hardware, exterior and interior ADA upgrades, structural improvements, and replacement of mechanical, electrical, lighting, plumbing, fire protection systems. The west wing of the building was renovated into a dedicated Children’s Wing which includes a secure entry, courtyard space, deck, and a new reclaimed wood privacy fence. The project scope included meticulously landscaped grounds and extensive measures were taken to preserve and move many of the existing trees located on the property.

Palo Alto Art Center Renovation

Located on the campus of Southern Utah University, the Southern Utah Museum of Arts is a single-story building that will feature flexible gallery space, classrooms, offices for administrators and staff, and art processing and storage. The building’s structural system includes concrete footings and foundation walls with structural steel columns. A unique feature to the building is that its roof will extend out to create a covered plaza. This extension will provide additional space for outdoor events near the lobby to the museum.

Cedar City, UT

Southern Utah Museum of Art (SUMA) at Southern Utah University

The Beverly Taylor Sorenson Center for the Arts is expected to change the cultural life of Cedar City, Utah and its surrounding region. The Center for the Arts will combine visual arts with education. The project itself encompasses approximately 5.5 acres of site development and two brand new buildings: The Southern Utah Museum of Arts (SUMA), and the Utah Shakespeare Festival (USF) Facility.

Beverley Taylor Sorenson Center for the Arts at Southern Utah University

The BYU-Idaho Visual Arts Studio is a new facility located where the Kirkham Building once stood on the north end of campus. The single-story building holds two large classrooms for the Department of Art’s sculpting and ceramics courses. Other rooms include plaster area, wood shop, glazing and kiln rooms, a foundry, forge and welding areas, faculty offices, a locker area for students to store projects, a lobby, and larger storage areas in the back to house kilns, clay, and other art supplies. The building’s north façade features a tall aluminum curtain wall system which is one of the more unique and visually appealing aspects of the project. During construction, Big-D crews were challenged with COVID-19 labor shortages and supply chain issues, as well as coordination of numerous design elements that were particularly challenging to navigate through. In the end, the project was a success, and the new building is one of the more visually attractive buildings on campus.

BYU-Idaho Visual Arts Studio Building

Located in the heart of Downtown Salt Lake City, Utah, the John W. Gallivan Center is an urban plaza that provides a variety of year-round entertainment. Visitors enjoy free concerts at the amphitheater in the summer, ice skating in the winter, and weekday lunch and concerts near the pond. The Gallivan Center also hosts festivals and private events, including weddings, all year long. The adjacent UTA TRAX light rail station increases access and foot traffic.

Gallivan Center Ice Rink, Amphitheater & Support Facilities Remodel

The National Ability Center works to empower individuals of all abilities by building lifetime skills through sport, recreation, and educational programs. Headquartered in Park City, Utah, the organization provides adaptive lessons, equipment, camps and more for individuals and families. The facility also provides training for Paralympic athletes from around the world.
In 2018, the National Ability Center announced plans to expand its facility. Big-D Signature is currently working on two large projects as part of the expansion. Signature will expand the organization’s equestrian building. The two-story expansion will also feature new entrances, a viewing and lounge space, meeting rooms, a physical therapy clinic and office space for employees and volunteers.

Park City, UT

National Ability Center Expansion

The Tracy Aviary is located inside Liberty Park near downtown Salt Lake City and spans eight acres. It is a longstanding part of the city’s history, originally opening in 1938. Big-D constructed a multi-phase renovation of the facility to completely transform its physical landscape and exhibits and position them as a world-class zoological facility and major attraction for Utahns and visitors. Phase one was a Visitor Center and Park Entrance with features including education and guest services spaces, entrance plaza, and pelican pond boardwalk. Phase two was the South America Pavilion and Bird Show Amphitheater. The South American Pavilion is dedicated to the birds and habitat of Mexico and Panama and includes exhibit buildings, holding facilities, and an interactive plaza. The outdoor Bird Show Amphitheater incorporates a beautifully constructed shotcrete backdrop, formed to resemble the granite slabs found in nearby Little Cottonwood Canyon. The Tracy Aviary received LEED Gold® certification.

Tracy Aviary

The Capitol Theatre is a three-story, brick and terra cotta building, originally built in 1913. It has undergone several renovations and remodels since opening and was added the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. Big-D performed one of the more recent interior renovations with the goal of preserving its distinguished historic beauty while making improvements to modernize accommodations and amenities. This included renovation and reconfiguration of orchestra-level seating with wider seats, optimized views, and improved access to new ADA seating, and renovation of basement chorus dressing rooms, showers, and restrooms. Construction also included additions of a new announcer booth in the rear orchestra level and a new A/V system for cleaner sound and more coverage throughout the theatre. The project also involved a rooftop boiler replacement as well as installation of new roofing and insulation. Throughout the project, the Big-D team took great care to protect existing finishes and historic architectural elements of the theatre while performing renovations and remodeling.

JQ Lawson Capitol Theatre Renovation Phase II

The Salt Lake City Library is a stunning, award-winning public facility and one of the most architecturally unique structures in Utah. The project consists of a five-story, triangular-shaped main building that houses the stacks and readers’ facilities, an adjacent administration wing, a glass-enclosed urban room, and a crescent-shaped wall that contains four levels of reading areas above retail space that contains shops and food establishments. The wall descends toward the outdoor piazza, providing a sweeping external staircase that connects the piazza to a rooftop garden. The adjoining piazza contains an amphitheater and a children’s garden. The Urban Room is an interior space for social interaction, flooded with natural light, and situated between the library and the crescent wall. Also part of the scope of construction, Big-D self-performed the concrete work for the two-level subterranean parking structure for the library and surrounding shops.

The Natural History Museum of Utah is an impressive, architecturally unique building that houses the state’s extraordinary historic collection of 1.2 million ancient artifacts and features innovative exhibitions, gallery spaces, and educational spaces to further its mission of public engagement in the sciences. The LEED Gold® building sits on a 17-acre site is cut into a hillside overlooking the Bonneville Shoreline Trail. Museum spaces include eight themed exhibition galleries, children’s gallery, changing exhibit space, cafe, museum store, community meeting rooms. The exterior features board formed concrete walls and a standing seam copper horizontal façade mined from Kennecott Utah Copper&#8217;s Bingham Canyon Mine. Construction was challenging from the start with extensive excavation work and construction of a 45-feet tall soldier pile wall. Extensive, complex concrete work was another significant challenge. Big-D self-performed the concrete which required rigorous collaboration and some unique and never-been-done-before techniques. The project was an overwhelming success, completed within budget, and has since be recognized with numerous awards.
